The 10th Meeting of the Society was characterized by an overwhelming interest and participation of neurosonologists from all over the world. A total of 446 experts attended the Meeting coming from Western and Eastern Europe, the US, the middle and far East, South America and Australia. There were 279 participants, 76 speakers, 48 guests and 43 exhibitors. Almost 200 high quality platform and poster presentations and a large number of invited lectures reflected significantly the interest in this Meeting. The topics of the Meeting were:
- Carotid aterosclerosis
Plaque characterization, grading and risk profiles - Arterial wall imaging, IMT and distensibility
Perfusion imaging in acute stroke and follow-up - Sono – thrombolysis
Tissue imaging in non vascular brain diseases - Embolus detection
Functional TCD - The heart and the brain
Ultrasound in critical care - Ultrasound in surgical and interventional procedures
Training and certification in Neurosonology
The attention of the experts was focused on the most recent developments in the various fields of neurosonology, but the running theme of the Meeting was the applicability of ultrasound in daily clinical practice. Nevertheless, future technological developments and peculiar applications of ultrasound such as in hyperbaric medicine were also part of the program and received a great consensus. The organizers considered the tutorials as the qualifying section of the event and their efforts were highly appreciated: 73 participants enjoyed the expertise of very well known neurosonographers in several areas of interest ranging from the acute neurovascular setting to non – vascular neurological disorders. With the goal of finding a common language in neurosonology, the round up of the current training methods in different European countries was very much appreciated by the worldwide participants. A touching moment was the section dedicated to Professor Elietta Maria Zanette at the Aula Magna of the University of Padova, the cradle of the European medicine, and the visit to the anatomical theatre of Fabrici d’Acquapendente which was represented on the logo of the Meeting.
The success of the Meeting depended mainly upon the highly qualified scientific contributions and on the expertise of the speakers, even though the setting of the Congress contributed greatly to create a very appealing and friendly atmosphere throughout the event. On behalf of the Neurological Department of the University of Padova we are grateful to the Committee of the ESNCH for giving us the honour to organize the 10th meeting of the Society and the pleasure to share your company.
